Macleay Island in southeast Queensland, is the second largest island in the cluster of islands located in Southern Moreton Bay with a strongly growing population. It is part of the group of 4 populated islands between mainland and North Stradbroke Island. It is 30 km from Brisbane. Macleay is mainly residential with a relaxed laid-back lifestyle.
There are two supermarkets on the island, FoodWorks and closer to the jetty is The Spar Supermarket - your daily grocery needs will be met. If you wind your way on foot from the jetty, you can't miss Pub Paradise. And just a walking distance from the jetty is also the Blue Parrot Cafe. Not far from the cafe is the Macleay Pharmacy. Wandering around Macleay, you will come across - like in any residential area - doctors surgery and dentist. There is the aroma of freshly baked bread coming from the bakery. Ladies with new hair cuts are stepping out from the hairdresser, a few heading to see what is new in Macleay's fashion shops. And if you are in a hurry, there is the Taxi service to whisk you quickly to your destination. There is, of course, a service station, an ambulance and the local fire brigade. The Macleay Island Community Centre provides a great meeting place for clubs, groups and others. These are just a few of the things you find on Maclay.
Macleay's Aboriginal name is "Jencoomercha" and it was regarded as an Aboriginal meeting place with spiritual importance.
For many years Macleay provided the Brisbane markets with tropical fruits, nuts and vegetables.
The island has unique native flora and mangrove foreshores. It maintains a thriving population of wildlife, including approximately 200 resident species of birds.
Macleay has a number of beaches - Pat's Park, Thompson's Point, Corroborree Place, Potts Point - where you can enjoy fishing, having a picnic or just plain relaxing.
On Macleay you can play a round of golf and relax afterwards in the club house on Waterside Drive. Besides the golf club visitors can also enjoy bowls club, boat club and arts centre.
You can also visit the tiny island of Perulpa, joined to Macleay via a causeway.
